Asset Differences between Renters and Home Owners (Portland Metro Area)

Asset Differences between Renters and Home Owners

I’ve just recently come across an interesting graph that shows the differences between a renter and Home owner statistic that is astounding.

The Renter shows net worth at $4,000 and the Home owner at $184,000. (source: Federal Reserve)

In the Portland, Vancouver, Beaverton area, another chart shows the value of Home ownership in 5, 10, 15 and 20 year increments. It shows the equity build up that is attained from Home ownership. Obviously, the longer the property is owned, the more equity build up there is.

This begs the question of; how can anyone that Rents will ever be able to retire?
